Its called an 88 spcl because it is a no frills engion. It does not have the amenties like the 90 or 115hp have. Outboard Jack didnt go into specifics.1) Make sure the throttle plate linkages are all sync'd. If all 4 are not closed/opening simultaneously you will have unbalanced fuel-air delivery and it can cause issues like this. 2) Verify your primer solenoid is working. Attach a volt meter to the leads connecting to the solenoid then push in your ignition key.Evinrude 88 SPL. This strong running, 90HP, freshwater motor is still on the boat and can be seen running. Boat was purchased for fishing at the Quabbin Reservoir which means a 25HP limit, so this can't be used. Hose pressure is forcing water up through the engine, not the water pump. The water pump should be the FIRST thing to look at whenever there is any sign of overheating.

Seems that the fuel primer/enrichment solenoid was shot and was pumping gas into the carb all the time.
